Luke Yoquino Discusses New Book on the Science of Learning for MIT XTalks
by Adam Felts
AgeLab researcher Luke Yoquinto and Sanjay Sarma, MIT’s Vice President of Open Learning, spoke about their new book, Grasp: The Science Transforming How We Learn, as part of the ongoing MIT xTalks series on October 7.
Yoquinto began by discussing the ideas of the early psychologists and education theorists E. L. Thorndike and John Dewey, and how their respective philosophies of science continue to represent two ways of thinking about how people learn – one reductionist and mechanistic, the other holistic and expansive.
He also talked about the possibilities and challenges of applying recent developments in cognitive science to pedagogical practice, including strategies that could help lifelong learners avoid forgetting.
